A LITTLE TIME TRAVEL

MANY YEARS, ONE HOUSE

The listed façade and the ornate iron inn sign still bear witness to what the Eisenhut once was. First recorded in the 11th century, once an inn and now a boutique hotel, the Eisenhut is steeped in history and tradition. A tradition to be preserved and gently carried into the present. Are you ready to travel back in time with us?

A LOOK BACK

WHAT WAS, WHAT IS

EISENHUT

Come to stay

It has been a full eight centuries since the *Gasthof Eisenhut* was first mentioned in historical records. It is one of the few townhouses in Europe to have retained its name for over 730 years.

HISTORY OF THE HELMET

WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?

“Eisenhut” refers to a simple type of helmet common in the Middle Ages, offering protection against sabre blows and the elements. A depiction of this helmet still adorns the historic inn sign today.

BINDERGASSE

From then to now

Home to the Eisenhut, Bindergasse connects not only Bozen’s old-town hotspots but also the past and present. It was established around 1215 as part of a city expansion by the Lords of Wangen.

GUESTHOUSE CULTURE

Always a welcoming place

Bindergasse, already an important transport hub in those days, was home to numerous inns from an early stage. *Gasthof Eisenhut* was among the first, making it a true historical gem.

THE NAMING

As “vordere Gasse”…

...became "Bindergasse"! The alley only received its current name in the 18th century, inspired by the profession of the *Fassbinder* (cooper), a common trade at the time.

ANDREAS HOFER

A visit to the prison

The historical significance of Bindergasse is evident in key events of the past. In 1810, the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer was briefly imprisoned here.

A TOOTH STORY

Teeth at the tavern

An issue of the *Bozner Nachrichten* from 25 April 1925 reveals that *Gasthof Eisenhut* once offered guests the chance to buy old false teeth and dentures “at a bargain price of 25 lire.”

BURNING BLAZE

Fire at the Eisenhut

Another report, this time from the *Dolomiten* newspaper, documents a fire that broke out at *Gasthof Eisenhut* on 2 April 1936. The fire was extinguished, with damages amounting to “2,000 lire.”

GUESTHOUSE AND HOTEL

Always a welcoming place

For centuries, *Gasthof Eisenhut* remained true to its purpose. Most recently, the building housed hotel guests before standing empty for several years.

OLD MEETS NEW

Eisenhut Boutique Hotel

In 2023, the Eisenhut came into the hands of two South Tyrolean hotelier families. While the listed façade remained unchanged, nostalgia and modernity have been harmoniously intertwined inside since 2025. Welcome to the present!
